A small town artist with national acclaim, Martin Grelle has won many admirers with his beautifully rendered landscapes of the American West. Growing up in the foothills of Central Texas, Grelle fell in love with his surroundings from an early age and used painting as an outlet to express the natural beauty. With the influence of local artists James Boren and Melvin Warren, both noted Cowboy Artists, Grelle abandoned his part-time job and became a professional painter. Working mostly with oils and occasionally acrylics, Grelle’s paintings convey the spirit of the vast Western landscape and the people of the land, both historically and contemporarily.
Dedicated research on his subjects has imparted a deep understanding of the people and places that Grelle paints. Combining figures and southwestern landscapes with studied detail, Grelle uses the color and texture of his imagery to communicate the pioneering spirit of his subjects. Viewers feel connected with the iconic figures and striking landscapes, carving a niche for Grelle as one of the most renowned Western artists.
In 1995, Grelle was elected to the Cowboy Artists of America, an honor among Western artists. His artwork has won many awards, including the CAA People’s Choice Award in 2002 and the grand prize at the prestigious Prix de West Invitational at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum, becoming one of only six artists to have won the top award twice (2002, 2005). His work has been featured in many publications such as Southwest Art, Art of the West, and American Cowboy. Grelle continues to paint today on his ranch in central Texas, maintaining a successful career for over thirty years.
