Michael Borremans was born in 1963 in Belgium. He began his artistic career as a photographer, but turned to painting in the 1990s. He still uses photographs as inspiration for a work. Michael Borremans is well known for his extraordinary portraits. In his figurative drawings and paintings have a dramatic theatrical quality to them and are carefully staged by the artist.
Borremans work is influenced by some 18th-century art and artist such as Édouard Manet, Degas and Diego Velázquez . You can see references to other works in art history indirectly in his paintings.
